Gait Analysis

Welcome to Foot Lab where we perform an online video gait analysis in 4 easy steps.

A gait analysis provides key information about the way you run, and helps runners to choose the right type of shoe for their running gait, both optimising performance and reducing the risk of injury.

Find out how you run by following the steps below to get your free gait analysis - and we'll do the rest.

Start

STEP 1: RECORD A VIDEO

  • Place the camera around 12-18 inches behind the treadmill and approximately 4-8 inches off of the ground. If you don’t have a tripod, why not ask a friend to help?
  • If you have a few pairs of shoes, wear the least supportive pair you own.
  • Record at least 20 seconds of you running on a treadmill.
  • The video should show you running in the centre of the screen, showing a clear view of each foot as it lands and continues through to toe off. Try to make sure you are running at a pace that is close to your normal training pace.
  • The video needs to be under 300MB and one of the following file types: .avi .mov .mpeg or .wmv

Step 2: A Bit About You

As well as analysing your video footage, we'll also need to ask some questions about you and your running.Factors such as how long you've been running, your average weekly mileage and the type of surface you run on are all important here.

To submit your video, click on the link and attach your video to the email. In the email we'll also ask you some questions about your training. Please answer as many of these as you can, to help us provide as accurate and personalised analysis as possible.

Step 3: Expert Analysis

Our specialist will analyse your video footage, assess your gait to establish your level of pronation and identify any biomechanical inefficiencies which might be impacting on your performance.

We'll analyse your gait frame by frame throughout your footstrike, from the landing phase through to toe off, identifying both your level of pronation and your individual footstrike pattern. From this we can identify whether you are an overpronator, a neutral runner, or if you underpronate.

STEP 4: OUR RECOMMENDATION

Having assessed your video footage, our specialist will feedback their findings, including a detailed analysis of your running gait, and our recommendations as to the best type of running shoe for you - along with any additional suggestions we feel might be useful. We're also happy to answer any further questions you might have - by email or give us a call on 01274 530 530

Our gait analysis will provide a key insight into your running and training, as well as helping you to choose the right running shoe for your gait. This means improved performance and a reduced risk of injury...so what are you waiting for? Click below to get started.

Your Questions Answered...

  • What is Gait Analysis?

A gait analysis provides you with essential information about the way you run, and most importantly enables you to measure your rate of pronation. This in turn helps you to select the right type of running shoe, for your gait, with the ultimate aim of ensuring your footstrike is as bio-mechancically efficient as possible, reducing the risk of injury and optimising performance.

This involves running on a treadmill for a few minutes while videoing your running gait. This footage is then slowed down, your gait assessed and analysed in detail by our specialist who will then feedback their findings.

  • What is Pronation?

Pronation is the natural inwards rolling movement of the foot during the footstrike which occurs as weight is transferred from the heel through to the forefoot. This neutral gait is the most natural, and bio-mechanically efficient type of footstrike.

Overpronation occurs where the foot rolls inwards excessively, placing excessive wear on the medial side of the foot, destabilising it and causing it to absorb shock less efficiently. This impacts negatively on the runner's bio mechanical alignment and efficiency, in particular impacting on the hips, knees and ankles and increasing the risk of injury.

Under pronation or supination is less common and is the insufficient inward rolling of the foot on landing, both destabilising the foot and preventing it from absorbing shock efficiently. This tends to affect runners with high arches and tight Achilles tendons, who are at increased risk of injury...

  • What are the benefits?

Gait analysis will give you key insight into your running mechanics, and help to pinpoint gait inefficiences. Armed with this knowledge you can make the best training and product choices to enhance your running performance.
