Our SportsShoes ambassador, Ben Mounsey, takes an in-depth look at the Salomon Sense Pro running pack collection. More specifically, which size packs are best to use for different types of training and racing, what kit goes into each vest or belt and how best to pack each one.

1. Salomon Sense Pro 5L Backpack

• Comfortable - The Sense Pro 10 will ensure a smooth and comfortable fit, by removing all pressure points, therefore removing the risk of chafing and irritation.

What would you use this backpack for?

At 5L, this is the smallest and lightest backpack in the range and therefore perfect for shorter training sessions and races. I would carry bare essentials and lightweight kit for emergency situations, or simply for if the weather takes a turn for the worse.

What to pack?

• Essential items, including phone, keys and money.

• Additional kit/clothing or mandatory trail/fell racing kit. This includes a hat, gloves, compass, whistle (in case of emergency), a lightweight waterproof jacket and trousers (with taped seams!), fluid, food, a map (for races).

• Race poles for ultra-distances.

Quick tip: I keep my phone and money in a doggy bag for easy and cheap waterproof protection.

2. Salomon Sense Pro 10 Limited Edition Backpack

Every second counts in an ultra and that comfort and convenience make all the difference. With a black and white design inspired by Salomon's earliest hydration packs, the Salomon Sense Pro 10L Limited Edition Running Vest is ultra-comfortable with no friction points and a precise fit. With instant access to your trail essentials, you can push on further and faster.

This pack shares the same features as the Sense Pro 5, but the bigger volume allows you to carry extra kit and food for longer adventures.

What would you use this backpack for?

This pack is perfect for longer-distance training sessions and races. Although, for ultra-distance running and races I would recommend moving up to a 12L, 14L or 16L pack based on distance and personal preference.

What to pack?

• The same essential items as above, including phone, keys and money.

• Additional kit/clothing or mandatory trail/fell racing kit. These include hat, gloves, compass, emergency blanket, whistle, first aid kit, headtorch (min 300 lumens), a heavier, more durable waterproof jacket and trousers (with taped seams!), fluid (some with electrolytes – dry pouch of energy fuel which you can mix with water at an aid station), more food, a map (for races). For longer races, you may also want/need to carry extra kit and spare batteries for your headtorch.

• Race poles for ultra-distances.

Quick tip: Buy maps printed on waterproof paper. For maps I print from home on non-waterproof paper - I keep them in plastic A4 pockets.

The Salomon Sense Pro Belt is a minimalist running belt that's great for all your essentials on a shorter session or when paired with a running vest/pack if racing takes you further afield.

• Race poles - which can be attached at the back of the belt using the straps.
